Noël Coward: Art & Style, celebrating the visual side of Coward’s life and work, opens at the Guildhall Art Gallery in the City of London on 14 January 2021. William Nicholson had a lifelong interest in the theatre. In 1925, with his wife Edie, Nicholson designed costumes for Massine’s ballet The Rake, which was part of Noel Coward’s On with the Dance at the London Pavilion. Two years later, he designed costumes and sets for Noel Coward’s Criterion production The Marquise, starring Marie Tempest. Two of his designs for The Marquise will be on show at the latest exhibition.
